The Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago (YCFC) has been running free tournaments for Chicago kids in grades K-8 for approximately fifteen years. In the past, these tournaments have been held in elementary and middle schools, but attendance increased substantially during the 2009-2010 school year, and future events will be held in Chicago-area. All Business attire is Free to All Chicago residents, Chicago Public Schools students and City of Chicago Colleges enrollees.“This is what the City of Chicago invites, the police and kids working together,” said Johnson, “so we can see each other in a different light.”Fifth-grader Davonte Pennington, an 11 year-old at Alex Haley Academy, has been playing chess for two years. He said playing chess with police officers is fun.“I won two and only lost one,” he said. “I think this is great because you can play, you can have fun, and you can talk. It’s amazing.”Earle STEM Academy chess player Lavell Harris is new to the game, with Wednesday being his first competition.“I was nervous because this is my first time playing chess and it’s with people who’ve been playing for three to four years,” said the seventh-grader.“I practice everyday in the morning,” Lavell said, adding that he won one game. Through the program the local police officers make weekly visits to 15 local after-school chess clubs. They’ve been practicing since September.She also serves on the board of directors of the Chicago Foundation for Women and the Chicago Chess Foundation.
In many cases high school volunteers can earn service learning credits for their efforts. The CCF can also use talented high school students as volunteers during tournaments. High school students frequently serve as chess mentors and trainers in elementary schools. Parents can also volunteer at tournaments and camps, ensuring a positive experience for all participating students.
Cash donations will advance the goals of the foundation, but your support as a volunteer, coach or mentor is just as important. The foundation can also provide resources to teachers hoping to serve as scholastic chess coaches.The Chicago Chess Foundation needs your assistance as we build a robust chess community throughout the City of Chicago. The CCF can guide teachers toward educational tools for the classroom and opportunities for professional development. Some teachers choose to integrate chess into their curriculums and others are enthusiastic about coaching.

While most other organizations charge fees that put chess events out of reach of most eligible players, our goal is to provide chess learning opportunities at no or low cost.
